What is Equine Sports Massage?

Equine Sports Massage is the therapeutic application of Swedish Massage techniques to relax or stimulate the muscle tissue of the equine.  Although referred to as Sports Massage, the therapeutic techniques applied are equally suitable and recommended for all disciplines from happy hackers, Riding Club horses/ponies and family cobs to Olympic sports horses and Grade One racehorses.

Equine Sports Massage can be applied as an essential body maintenance therapy which can help prevent injury and enhance performance, prepare for competition and aid post competition recovery, or to assist in recovery and rehabilitation post injury.

Equine Sports Massage Therapists have in depth knowledge of equine anatomy and physiology.  The equine body is the interlinkage of bone, ligament and muscle with nervous and circulatory systems to name just a few.  The massage therapist considers the equine as a whole to have a better appreciation and understanding when part of the body system breaks down.

It must be remembered that massage therapy can only enhance performance within the capabilities of the individual equine and their performance may be limited by their conformation.

Veterinary Consent

Equine Sports Massage therapists work as part of a health team, prioritising the care and rehabilitation of the equine athlete.  Prior to any massage therapy, either veterinary referral or consent must be obtained from the veterinary usually responsible for the equine in question.

To protect the welfare of sick or injured animals, the Veterinary Act of 1966 was passed to safeguard against treatment by non qualified professionals.
